Are Socio-Emotional Learning Programs Effective?

Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs aim at developing social and emotional competencies in children with the goal of improving their well-being, decreasing violence between children and between adults and children and improving academic outcomes. Most SEL programs aim at teaching the following problem-solving algorithm:

• Identifying and labelling emotions
• Identifying the problems behind negative emotions
• Figuring out possible responses to the problem
• Figuring out the consequences of each possible response
• Choosing and implementing the most adequate response
